O3+ + H

ABSTRACT

The ORNL ion-atom merged-beams apparatus has measured benchmark electron capture cross sections for the multicharged ion O3+ on H(and D) from 0.9 eV/u to 1692 eV/u (C. C. Havener, M. R. Porter, and R. A. Phaneuf, in Nucl. Methods B:, 56,57 95 (1991). The measurements lie significantly below the calculations of Bienstock et al. (1983) which predict that capture to the (2p3p) configuration dominates at low energies. The measurements are more consistent with the calculations of Gargaud et al. (1989) which predicts that capture to the (2p3s) configuraton is also important at energies above 10 eV/u. More recent measurements (C. C. Havener, F. W. Meyer, and R. A. Phaneuf, in Physics of Electronic and Atomic Collisions, edited by W. R. MacGillivray, I. E. McCarthy, and M. C. Standage (AIP, New York, 1992), p. 381) follow the energy dependence predicted by Gargaud et al. below 10 eV/u for capture to the 3p state. Part of the B-like O3+ ion beam is in the (1s22s2p2)4P metastable state (16% estimate), which may contribute at least in part to the discrepancy.
